What Jesus thinks about rich, pious, “respectable” people

Jesus says that things are not always what they seem

Here’s a story Jesus told. It was recorded in Luke 18.9-14

Some people were very sure they were righteous enough for God, and who scorned everyone else. So Jesus told them a story.

Jesus said, “Two men went to the Temple to pray.

“One was a very openly religous person, and the other was a despised tax collector.

“The religious man stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people, cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

“Jesus went on, “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed.

“Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ ”

Jesus looked at his audience. He said, “I tell you, this sinner, not the religious man, went back home justified before God.

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be lifted up.”

What do you think?

  1. Is there something in the story that gets you thinking of something you’ve noticed about people? Or about God?
  2. Good. Is there a specific thing you’d like to:
    1. Do because of what you’ve read, or
    2. Mull over , or
    3. Share with someone?

I’m asking, because when we try to line up our lives with Jesus He blesses us. So, would you like to do something?

This is the best ever
