Jesus is unconventional about money

Jesus has a different idea about money

Here’s a story Jesus told It was recorded in Luke 12.13-21

Someone called from a crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.”

Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?”

He said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

Then Jesus told them a story.

“A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.

“He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.

“And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’

“But ,” Jesus said, “God said to that rich man, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

Jesus went on, “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

What do you think?

  1. Is there something in this incident that you like? Something that strikes you in some way?
  2. OK. We’re not just skimming over this story … is there anything in it that puzzles you? Or that you think, ‘Wait a minute! That doesn’t seem right.’?
  3. Is there something in the story that gets you thinking of something you’ve noticed about people? Or about God?
  4. Alright. That’s good. Pause for a moment … Is there a specific thing you’d like to do because of what you’ve read? Perhaps mull over something you noticed? Or share with someone? Anything like that? I’m asking, because when we try to line up our lives with Jesus He blesses us. So, would you like to do something?
